After last week’s record equalling defeat, Skolars put in a much improved performance, but their inexperience showed again as they conceded 10 tries to a side looking to bounce back after relegation last season.
The home side got off to quick start scoring three tries in the first eleven minutes. Lewis Charnock cut inside to split the defence after Skolars had conceded an early penalty. Max Roberts attacked down the left to score with Ben Heyes going over on the right wing.
Skolars had a good chance to score but Jonathan Bell’s pass to Chris Gale was just forward. However, Jacob Thomas, back with the club on loan from London Broncos kicked through to the right wing and Jerome Yates touched down. Will Ramsey added the conversion. Thomas tried the same move later in the half, but that kick was too deep for Yates to reach before it went dead.
The Lions re-established their dominance with two tries before half-time. Lewis Else broke from his own half to score before Charnock stretched out in a tackle to score. They went further ahead after the break when Hayes found a gap in centre field 20 metres from the line.
Skolars then had a sustained period of attack, forcing two goal-line drop-outs, with Doug Chirnside going close before Aaron Small pushed his way under the defence from dummy half, Ramsey’s conversion hitting the posts.
However, they then let the ball go into touch from the kick-off allowing Swinton to attack. Billy Brickhill scored before Roberts completed his hat-trick. They were trying to find a gap near their own tryline when a pass went to ground, Yates scooped up the ball for Leighton Ball to finish off in the corner.
However, the Lions had the final word as Rhodri Lloyd score close to the posts giving Dan Abram an easy kick for his ninth conversion.
